It
is important to note that at any given time you will have a combination
of all three phases of hair growth being present in any given area.
Because the hair bulb can only be damaged in the Anagen Phase;
only hairs in the Anagen phase can be effectively treated.
The other hairs which are in different phases of growth will not
respond to treatment. This explains why any hair removal
system involves a series of treatments.
The correct timing of hair removal treatments make the process much
more effective. It is therefore important that treatments
be given approximately every 4 to 6 weeks as this appears to be
the average rate of hair growth and best timing for the hair removal
process.
The Skin
has 3 layers
1.
Epidermis
2.
Dermis
3.
Subcutaneous layer
The
epidermis is the outer covering of the body. On the outside
of this layer is the keratin layer. You see keratin when your
skin peels. The Pigment containing cells called melanocytes
are found in this layer. The light from the SpectraClear™
pulsed light system targets this coloring in the skin. The
heat builds up when the flash of light is emitted. If the
hair is in the growth phase called Anagen then the hair bulb can
be destroyed. The darker the pigment or melanin the more light
the skin absorbs. This is why very dark individuals should
not have laser or pulsed light therapy done since the amount of
light absorption could result in burns to the individual.
3 Phases
of
Hair
Growth
ANAGEN PHASE
Anagen phase
is the active phase of hair growth. This phase generally lasts
for several weeks. This is the only phase that the hair shaft
and the Papilla are in contact, allowing it to be disabled.
CATAGEN PHASE
During this
brief phase, the hair bulb regresses and begins to shrink
detaching from the papilla.
TELOGEN PHASE
This
phase marks the end of the resting phase which typically lasts for
a few weeks. The hair is released from the shriveled follicle
and the Anagen phase begins again.
