OSTEOPOROSIS

OsteoporosisBoron Plugs the Calcium Leak

Researchers have speculated that boron, a trace mineral found mostly in fruits and vegetables, may reduce urinary excretion of both calcium and magnesium and therefore help prevent osteoporosis. "So far, we have found that boron has a slight effect in decreasing urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium as well as increasing the production of estrogen and testosterone...

Minerals Make a Difference

Magnesium is essential for every major biological function, including your heartbeat. According to research, even marginal magnesium deficiency is not to be taken lightly. If you're interested in trying magnesium, Dr. Magaziner recommends starting with 500 milligrams a day. "this level is perfectly safe, although occasionally a person will develop loose bowels or diarrhea," he says. If you have heart or kidney problems, however, you should check with your doctor before taking magnesium supplements.

Take magnesium to regulate calcium

Magnesium, an essential mineral used to treat almost everything from depression to heart attack, is also crucial to bone health. Magnesium helps calcium get into the bones and converts vitamin D into its active form in the body.

Dr.Shawn Talbott, PH. D. Stated another side of osteoporosis. He says "The relationship between elevated cortisol levels an accelerated loss of cartilage, bone, and muscle has been demonstrated in numerous situations, including cases of people with Cushing's syndrome (where elevated cortisol results in severe osteoporosis and arthritis)

Dr. Cheney recommends a chelated form of magnesium called magnesium glycenate. "It's rapidly absorb in the gastrointestinal tract, so it doesn't cause digestive problems," he explains.

Calcium can be helpful in treating osteoporosis once the disease has develop. Investigators at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York, studied 118 women past the age of menopause. Over a three year period, they gave the women 1,700 milligrams of calcium, 1,700 milligrams of calcium plus the female hormones estrogen and progesterone or placebos (medically infective pills). Though the calcium-hormone mix was most effective, calcium alone significantly slowed bone mineral loss. Fruit May Boost Bone Health In Young Girls.

"For best results, I recommend that people take a multivitamin/mineral supplement that supplies 100 percent of the daily requirement of zinc, copper and manganese as well as a separate calcium supplement," says Dr. Saltman, a leading investigator in the study.
